Networking Topology

What is Networking Topology?
=> Technology is turm used to describe the way in which computers are connected in a network. A network topology is the physical layout of computer, cables, and other components on on a network. The physical topology describe the actual layout of the network hardware. There are a number of different network topologies and a network may be build using multiple topologies the different type of network layouts are:-

✓ Bus topology
✓ Star topology
✓ Ring topology

Bus Topology

This is a most popular topology. A bus topology consist of a main run of cable with  a Terminator at each end. All nodes like work-station, printers, laptops servers etc., are connected to the linear cable. The terminated is used to absob the single when the single reaches theend preventing signal bounce. When using bus topology, when a computer sends out a single, the single travels the cable length in both directions from the sending computer. When the single reaches the end of the cable length, it bounces back and the return in the direction it came from. This is known as signal bounce will create problem in network, because if the another single is send on the cable length at the some time, the two signals will collide.

Advantages of Bus Topology

√ Easy to connected a computer or peripheral to a linear Bus.
√ Requires less cable length than a star Topology.

Disadvantages of Bus Topology

Entire network shuts down if there is a break in the main cable.
√ terminators are required at both ends of the backbone cable.
√ Difficult to identify the problem if the entire network shuts down.
√ Not meant to be used as a stand-alone solution.

Star Topology

As the name specified, this topology physically lays the workstation and the server in the form of a star. star topology is designed with each node (like workstation, printers, laptop, service etc.) connected directly to a Central Network hub/switch. Each workstation has a cable that goes from the network card to network hub or switch.

Advantages of Star Topology

√ Easy to install and wire.
√ No disruptions to the network then connecting removing devices.
√ Easy to detect faults and to remove parts.

Disadvantages of Star Topology

Requires more cable length than a linear topology.
√ If the hub fails, nodes attached are disabled.
More expensive than linear bus topologies because of the cost of the devices.

Ring Topology

In a ring topology all computers are connected a cable that loops in a ring or circle. A ring topology is a circle that has no Star and no end and Terminators are not necessary in a ring topology. Signals travel in one direction on a ring while they are passed from one computer to the next, with eachcomputer regenerating the single so that it may travel the distance required. Main advantage of ring topologies that the signal degeneration is low since each workstation participating in the network is responsible for regenerating the weak signal. disadvantage is if one workstation fails entire network will fail.

Advantages of Ring Topology

√ The fair sharing of the network allows the network degrade gracefully.
√ It continues to function in a slower manner rather than fail completely.

Disadvantages of Ring Topology

failure of one computer on the ring affects the whole networks.
√ It is difficult to troubleshoot a ring network.
√ Adding or removing computers disrupts the network.
